The QR code market is a paywall maze
If you've ever tried to make a QR code for your business, you've probably noticed something weird: the useful stuff is locked.
You can generate a static QR code (one that permanently encodes a URL) for free basically anywhere — Canva does it, Adobe does it, dozens of small tools do it. But the moment you want something useful — like changing the destination without reprinting, or seeing who's actually scanning — you hit a subscription wall.
Here's what the big players charge for dynamic QR codes + analytics:
- QR Tiger: $5–$89/month
- Beaconstac (Uniqode): $15–$99/month
- Flowcode: $5–$250/month
- Bitly: $10–$199/month
Even the cheapest paid tier works out to $60–$180/year for features that are, frankly, not that hard to build. I should know — I just built them.
So why am I giving it away?
Three honest reasons.
1. I'm not a QR company
I'm Joseph, the Neighborhood Website Guy. I build custom websites for small businesses in Houston and beyond. My product is a full-featured website with management — $499 to build, $89/month to maintain. Weekly blog posts, quick edits, direct access to me, the whole deal.
A QR code tool is a small piece of tech inside a much bigger product. It costs me essentially nothing to host (the code runs in your browser, not my server — zero cost per QR). Charging $5/month for it when it's this cheap to run feels gross.
2. It's proof of what I can build
When someone asks me “what can you actually build?” I can now say: “Go to my site, use this free tool, see for yourself. That took me 2 days. Imagine a whole website.”
Showing beats telling. Every small business owner who uses the QR tool and thinks “this is cleaner than the paid stuff I tried” is a tiny trust deposit.
3. Free tools build real audiences
I can't compete with QR Tiger on SEO — they've been around for years. But I don't need to rank #1 for “QR code generator” to win. If 100 small business owners in Texas use this tool over the next year and 2 of them need a full website, that's worth more than any paywall subscription.
